Today is dedicated to immersing yourself in the rich history and captivating culture of Marrakech. Begin with a visit to the stunning Bahia Palace, renowned for its intricate architecture and lush courtyards. Explore the area around the iconic Koutoubia Mosque (exterior view) and delve into the past at the historic Saadian Tombs. Afterwards, lose yourself in the bustling souks, a sensory labyrinth of vibrant textiles, aromatic spices, and traditional handicrafts. Finally, find tranquility at the serene Majorelle Garden, a beautiful botanical oasis gifted to the city by Yves Saint Laurent.
Depart Marrakech after breakfast, embarking on a scenic journey across the High Atlas Mountains via the dramatic Tizi n’Tichka pass (2260m). Enjoy breathtaking panoramic views along the winding mountain roads. Arrive at the magnificent Ait Ben Haddou, an ancient fortified Kasbah and UNESCO World Heritage site, famously featured in many films. Explore its narrow streets and learn about its history before continuing to Ouarzazate, the “Hollywood of Morocco.” Here, you’ll have the option to visit the Atlas Film Studios and see impressive desert film sets.
Begin your day with a visit to the Skoura Oasis, a verdant palm grove dotted with historic kasbahs. Journey onwards through the fragrant Valley of Roses (Kelaat M’Gouna), known for its annual rose festival and cosmetic production. Your route leads you into the spectacular Dades Gorges, characterized by towering rock formations often called “monkey fingers.” Take in the dramatic views and relax amidst this beautiful natural setting as the sun begins to set.
Continue your journey towards the Sahara, first visiting the impressive Todra Gorges. Pass through Berber villages en route to Erfoud and Rissani, historic trading posts, before reaching the edge of the desert at Merzouga. Here, the incredible golden dunes of Erg Chebbi await. Wake early to experience the breathtaking beauty of a Sahara sunrise over the dunes – a truly unforgettable sight. After breakfast at the camp, begin your journey north towards Fes. Travel through the scenic Ziz Valley, a vast oasis renowned for its lush palm groves stretching along the riverbed. Continue through the Middle Atlas Mountains, passing through the town of Midelt, nestled between mountain ranges. Journey onwards through cedar forests (perhaps spotting Barbary macaques near Azrou) before arriving in Fes, Morocco’s ancient cultural and spiritual heart, for your overnight stay.
Dedicate the full day to exploring Fes, one of the world’s oldest and largest medieval cities. Dive into the labyrinthine alleyways of the Fes el-Bali medina (UNESCO World Heritage site), discovering its bustling souks, historic madrasas (like Bou Inania), fondouks, and key landmarks such as the Al Quaraouiyine University (exterior view), the oldest continuously operating university globally. Witness the ancient craft at the vibrant Chouara Tanneries (from a viewpoint) and soak up the unique atmosphere of this imperial city.
Travel north today through rolling hills and farmland towards the picturesque Rif Mountains, heading for Chefchaouen, the enchanting ‘Blue City’. Upon arrival, check into your accommodation. Spend the afternoon exploring its uniquely beautiful blue-washed streets and alleyways at your leisure. Discover the historic Kasbah Museum in the main square (Plaza Uta el-Hammam), browse the local artisan shops, and simply enjoy the relaxed, tranquil atmosphere of this charming mountain town.
After breakfast, depart Chefchaouen and journey towards Rabat, the modern capital of Morocco, situated on the Atlantic coast.
