Discover Volubilis. It’s an impressive Roman ruin standing proudly on a fertile Moroccan plain. This is the best-preserved archaeological site in Morocco. It’s famous largely for its beautiful mosaics. You can still see these mosaics right where ancient artists placed them. Recognizing its importance, UNESCO declared Volubilis a World Heritage Site in 1997.
Getting There
Volubilis is just 32 km north of Meknes. It’s also close to the holy city of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. This makes it easy to include Volubilis in a day trip from Meknes or Fez.
The city is large, covering 40 hectares. Much of it remains buried.
Excavations have uncovered about half of the site. The most famous buildings are in the northern part, away from the main southern entrance.
Planning Your Visit
Be careful of the strong summer sun. Water and hats are essential. Spring is a gentler time to visit. Wildflowers add color to the ancient stones, and the landscape is a vibrant green. The most magical times to walk through Volubilis are early morning or late afternoon. In the evening, watch the sunlight turn the columns golden for a truly special moment.
Feel free to wander the grounds. However, access to some delicate structures may be restricted.
Near the entrance, a small museum displays some recovered treasures, including beautiful bronzes.
Keep in mind that many other important finds from Volubilis are shown at the Rabat Archaeological Museum.
